(Un)folding Anthropocene dumplings: Animal and sustainable food advocacy in Asia
Webinar Description
Meat analogues have an established history in Asian dietary and culinary practices where they have traditionally been associated with Buddhism. Against this backdrop, the introduction of new plant-based meat substitutes as modern, animal friendly, and climate conscious alternatives is gradually changing the foodscape in the region. This development is closely connected to a complex chain of advocacy grounded in ideological and material translations and reinterpretations. This session will discuss the rise of animal rights and ethical vegan movements in Asia and the role of these actors advancing food transformation in the Anthropocene.
