Yichen RAO 饒一晨

Chair (Graduate Students)

Yichen RAO is a PhD candidate in Anthropology and STS at the University of Hong Kong (HKU). Before joining HKU, he completed an MPhil degree in Anthropology at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. His previous MPhil project focused on “Internet Addiction” treatment camps for Chinese adolescents, revealing the shifting landscape of China’s social control under digitalization, marketization and the one-child policy. His current PhD project is an exploration of people’s lives under the dramatic rise and fall of China’s Peer-to-Peer (P2P) online lending platforms, many of which turned out to be Ponzi schemes. He is an Adam Smith fellow at George Mason University and received Ernst Mach grant from the University of Vienna. He studies digital economy, finance and technology in China.
