Gonçalo D. SANTOS is an Assistant Professor of Social-Cultural Anthropology in the Department of Life Sciences and a full member of the Research Centre for Anthropology and Health (CIAS) at the University of Coimbra. He held previous positions at the London School of Economics and Political Science, the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology, and the University of Hong Kong. His research on China explores new approaches to questions of modernity, moral subjectivity, and social and technological transformation in times of increasing social and environmental uncertainties that are raising important questions about the future of human life on the planet. He is the author of Chinese Village Life Today (Univ. of Washington Press, 2021) and the co-editor of Transforming Patriarchy (Univ. of Washington Press, 2017). He is a participant in the Initiative for U.S.-China Dialogue on Global Issues Research Group on Culture and Society at Georgetown University. He is currently developing a research project on the politics of childbirth medicalization in contemporary China. He is the co-editor of a special section of the journal Technology and Culture on the histories of childbirth medicalization in China and Japan.
